COLUMBUS, Nebraska — James “Jim” Shanle, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and longtime member of the Columbus community, died at his home on Wednesday, October 21, 2026, following a farming accident. He was 63.
Remembered for his strong work ethic, practical skills, good humor, and unwavering devotion to his family, Jim built a life centered on hard work, faith, and meaningful relationships. Whether working on the farm, repairing equipment, or spending time with his loved ones, he brought dedication and warmth to the things that mattered most.
His passing leaves a deep void in the lives of his family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing him.
Early Life and Education
Jim was born in Columbus, Nebraska, on May 24, 1963, to Francis and Marylee (Ebner) Shanle. Growing up in the community, he developed the practical abilities and strong work ethic that would become defining features of his life.
He graduated from Lakeview High School in 1981 before pursuing further education in technical fields. He studied diesel mechanics at Northeast Community College in Norfolk and later attended Southeast Community College in Milford, earning a degree in electromechanical technology in 1987.
His education helped prepare him for a career that drew on his mechanical knowledge, problem-solving abilities, and interest in how things worked.
A Career Built on Hard Work
Jim spent 28 years working for Loup Public Power District while also farming alongside his father, Francis. Balancing his professional responsibilities with farm work reflected the determination and sense of responsibility that those closest to him admired.
After retiring in 2020, Jim devoted more of his time to his family and the farm. His retirement allowed him to continue doing the hands-on work he enjoyed while making room for the relationships that had always been central to his life.
His family affectionately described him as a “jack of all trades.” He had a remarkable ability to repair things, tackle practical challenges, and find solutions when something needed fixing.
For Jim, hard work was more than a job. It was a way to provide for his family, contribute to his community, and demonstrate his love through everyday actions.
A Devoted Husband and Father
On November 17, 1990, Jim married Carrie Heesacker at St. Anthony Catholic Church in Columbus. Their marriage marked the beginning of a life together built around family, shared experiences, and enduring commitment.
Jim and Carrie raised three children: Jesse, Chantel, and Justin. He took great pride in his role as a father and made a deliberate effort to create lasting family memories.
One of his traditions was taking the family on vacation each year. These trips provided opportunities to spend time together, enjoy new experiences, and strengthen the bonds that remained at the heart of their family life.
The lessons Jim passed on to his children extended beyond practical skills and the value of hard work. Through his example, he demonstrated loyalty, responsibility, generosity, and the importance of making time for the people one loves.
A Loving Grandfather and Friend
Jim’s family grew to include three grandchildren: Mabel, Lyla, and August Bakenhus. His role as a grandfather became another cherished part of his family life.
He is survived by his wife, Carrie Shanle; his children, Jesse Shanle, Chantel (Levi) Bakenhus, and Justin (Anna Rocheford) Shanle; and his grandchildren, Mabel, Lyla, and August Bakenhus.
He is also survived by his brother, Bill (Deb) Shanle; his sisters, Jane (Brad) Hoppens and Gerilyn Shanle; special friends Mike and Beth Drinnin; and numerous nieces, nephews, relatives, and family friends.
Jim was preceded in death by his parents, Francis and Marylee Shanle.
Those who knew Jim remember not only his ability to work hard and solve problems but also his sense of humor and the warmth he brought to everyday interactions. His personality could brighten a room, and his practical generosity made him someone people could count on.
Faith and Family Values
Jim was a devoted Catholic whose faith formed an important part of his life. His commitment to his beliefs was reflected in his loyalty to family, his generosity toward others, and the steady principles by which he lived.
He understood the importance of showing up for others and following through on responsibilities. Whether supporting his family, working alongside his father, or maintaining lifelong friendships, he approached his relationships with sincerity and care.
His legacy will be found in the values he passed on, the memories shared by those closest to him, and the many ways he made life better for the people around him.
